Hello, Bedford! It's Paula Constance with your new Bedford Daily.

First, today's weather:

Partly sunny today and breezy. High: 59. Low: 39.

Here are the top stories today in Bedford:

  1. If you feed seaweed to cows, will it help prevent greenhouse gas emissions? Seaweed is a prized and highly nutritious food in many cultures. Some scientists say it may become a delicacy that cows will have in their feed. After receiving two USDA grants, researchers at The University of New Hampshire will study if adding seaweed to the diet of dairy cows can help reduce methane emissions. Alix Contosta, a researcher on the project, said that cows produce methane as a part of their natural digestion process and mostly emit methane "through their burps." About 10% of all harmful greenhouse gases in the United States come from agriculture, according to the EPA. The U.N. Environment Programme noted that reducing methane emissions "is an effective way to slow climate change." (NHPR)
  2. The even-more-contagious Delta plus variant of Covid-19 is making global headlines as U.S. hospitals are seeing a spike in new cases. With the holidays approaching, health officials are recommending Covid-19 booster shots for those who are eligible. Local pharmacies, including CVS, Walgreens, and others, are offering booster shots for the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines and the second dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine. You can find out more here: https://www.vaccines.gov/, call 1-800-232-0233, or text your ZIP code to 438829 (GETVAX). (WMUR)
  3. Bedford crime alert: The Bedford Police Department is asking for the public's help in identifying a suspect and white SUV involved in a theft from the N.H. Liquor Store in Bedford on Wednesday, Oct. 27. If you have any information that may help, please contact Officer Mazzarella at 603-472-5113 ext. 214. You can find out more here:(Facebook)
  4. Free Covid-19 tests are now offered at four new locations in New Hampshire, including Manchester. If you think you have been exposed to COVID-19, you can receive a free test at one of the four free test sites located in Manchester, Nashua, Claremont, and Newington. The new test sites were set up in response to the overwhelming fall demand and lack of available appointments for Covid-19 tests. All tests are free and paid for by the state. The clinics are ideal for walk-in patients, said Dee Gallagher, a paramedic at ClearChoiceMD working at one of the sites. They are fast and convenient compared with most Covid-19 testing places, where patients sometimes wait for several hours. The closest location to Bedford is in Manchester across the street from the JFK Coliseum and Hunt Memorial Pool on 303 Beach Street. (NHPR)
