Wagner 'Escapes from Alcatraz' at Summer Swimming Competition
Derryfield School student from Bedford swam from Alcatraz with a seven mile run to Fort Point and back to Aquatic Park.

BEDFORD, NH — The 60 degree water, strong current, and treacherous rocks did not deter Senior Emma Wagner from donning her wetsuit and testing the waters off the coast of California in the 36th annual "Escape from Alcatraz" competition. The course combines the original swim from Alcatraz with a seven mile run to Fort Point and back to Aquatic Park.
Wagner finished first in her age group and fifth overall out of 148 competitors—this was her first open water race. Wagner shared that she enjoyed the experience and hopes to swim from “The Rock” again, perhaps at next year’s Alcatraz Sharkfest.
