Happy Sunday, Bedford! Here's everything you need to know going on today.
First, today's weather:
Cloudy with a slight chance of rain. High 63. Sunday night, overcast skied. Low 54.
Here are the top stories in Bedford today:
- "There are no refrigerators. You can't move in." That's what some New Hampshire renters are hearing after signing leases for their newly-constructed apartments. Some are facing moving delays of up to two months. On Wednesday, Rob Dapice from the New Hampshire Housing Finance Authority, told a workforce housing forum in Manchester that appliances are experiencing a microprocessor shortage. Many appliances use the same microprocessors as cars, he said, and when they are in short supply, cars are prioritized. Dapice added if the apartments do not have appliances., a certificate of occupancy allowing renters to move in will not be issued Wallace Farms, a recent project in Bedford, experienced a significant interruption in their appliance supply chain but were able to complete the project on time after finding another supplier. - A noticeable drop in school illnesses was reported when masks were used during outbreaks of COVID-19. Some New Hampshire communities are challenging school mask policies, but school administrators say that masks are working and help prevent the spread of the virus. In Bedford schools, masks are optional but are used in the short term after an outbreak. When students and teachers masked for 14-days following an outbreak at two Bedford schools, "the numbers really dropped," said Bedford Superintendent Michael Fournier. Fournier added that Bedford High School went from 32 active cases to two this week. "Right now, we have found that it is working," he said. (WMUR)
- After the sun sets on Sunday, look up at the darkening night sky to catch the last day of the Draconid meteor showers. This notoriously "sleepy" annual meteorite shower appeared in New Hampshire skies this year from October 8 -10. The Draconid meteor shower produces five meteors per hour most years, according to EarthSky, but dedicated stargazers will be delighted to see an occasional shooting star. American Meteor Society adviser Robert Lunsford said in previous years, the Draconid meteor shower can vary from year-to-year, but "has produced historic events in the past." The best time to watch the celestial show is right after dusk. Find a place away from artificial lights for a clear view. (WMUR)
