CONCORD, NH — Concord police are investigating a fatal overdose in a wooded area behind the Cumberland Farms on North Main Street on Thursday afternoon.

Just before 5 p.m., dispatch received a call from 911 about a woman reporting a man was behind in the store, in the woods upon the hill between North Main Street and Ferry Street, and was overdosing. The caller, dispatch said, was leaving due to having a possible active warrant. Fire and rescue teams were also summoned.

When the first officer arrived, they asked if anyone had called the number back in an effort to find out who was overdosing. Dispatch told the officer the cell number was owned by a man and police had only one prior contact with the woman connected to the line. The officer said a woman pointed out where the man was, and then she fled the area.

A New Hampshire State Police trooper was also in the area.

Fire dispatch said the man was not far from the store, but not all the way down the embankment. They also said the caller was leaving the scene.

“Your patient may be alone down there,” dispatch said.

EMTs arrived and worked on the man for more than 20 minutes, but were unable to revive him. They cleared the scene later.

Around 6 p.m., police were sent to a second overdose call, behind Marshalls on Storrs Street.

A witness reported a man unconscious on the ground on the north side and the back of the store. The man’s hands were curled up and around his face, but he was not moving.

Officers arrived, including interim police chief Barrett Moulton, and they confirmed the man was overdosing. The man was unconscious but breathing, Moulton told dispatch.

Fire and rescue teams were requested and arrived a few minutes later.

The man was loaded into an ambulance and taken to Concord Hospital.
