CONCORD, NH — An officer shot by a Lakes Region man has been released from the hospital, according to the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office.

Both the AG’s Office and the New Hampshire State Police Major Crime Unit are investigating the incident Monday night. According to officials, after a motor vehicle stop on Main Street, Demitri Zimmer, 24, of Laconia, flashed a gun and shot at an Ashland officer. The officer shot back at Zimmer, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The officer was taken to Concord Hospital for treatment.

An autopsy of Zimmer found he died of “multiple gunshot wounds,” and his death is a homicide.

“As used by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, homicide is defined as the killing of one person by another,” Michael Garrity, the director of communications of the department, said.

The officer was released from the hospital on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, Garrity said interviews with all involved are being held, and more information will be released later.

According to court records, Zimmer had an active felony reckless conduct-deadly weapon case out of Holderness working its way through the Grafton County Superior Court. He was accused of firing a 9 mm handgun at a neighbor’s residence, striking the home, in June 2025. At the time, Zimmer was living in Holderness. He was indicted on the charge in November 2025.
