New Hampshire National Guard Helicopter, AMC Staff Rescues Somerville Hiker In Pemi Wilderness

LINCOLN, NH — A hiker from Massachusetts having a medical emergency was rescued by the New Hampshire National Guard and others on Sunday night.

Around 7:15 p.m., New Hampshire Fish and Game were notified about a hiker near the Guyot Shelter, between Mount Bond and Mount Guyot, in the Pemi Wilderness, who collapsed. The hiker, later identified as Max Lichtenberger of Somerville, MA, was suffering from a seizure, was not alert, and was unable to walk, according to a report. Hikers in the area as well as Appalachian Mountain Club staff from the Guyot Shelter stabilized him and radioed for assistance.

"Due to the remote location, the hours of hiking and the sheer number of volunteers it would require to reach the location and then carry the injured hiker out, a call was made for the New Hampshire Army National Guard helicopter," Sgt. Christopher McKee of the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department said. "The New Hampshire Army National Guard called a flight crew and began a rescue."

Around 9:30 p.m., the helicopter left the Concord Airport and arrived at the shelter. Staff and the crew hoisted the hiker up to the copter and he was flown down to an awaiting Littleton Ambulance at the Cannon Mountain Ski Area landing zone.

At around 10:45 p.m., he was taken to Littleton Regional Hospital for treatment.
