SBA Marks 73 Years of Powering Main Street and America’s Industrial Base

For more than seven decades, the U.S. Small Business Administration has operated with a singular, vital mission: to protect, counsel and champion the independent entrepreneurs who serve as the backbone of our nation's economy.

But as we celebrate this milestone on July 30, marking 73 years since SBA's founding in 1953, we're doing far more than looking at a date on a calendar.

We're witnessing a modern, high-tech renaissance of New England enterprise. Today, reaching the American dream is a thriving reality that's driving our regional economy forward, sparked by a national focus on working family tax cuts, energy dominance and historic deregulation.

Over the last three months alone, new business formations have reached record highs across the country, and national jobs data have dramatically exceeded expectations with more than 560,000 jobs created. New Englanders are leading this charge. The fierce independence that defined our founders' lives on today in the sheer hustle of our modern innovators. When New Englanders set their minds to a problem—whether working out of a backyard workshop, spread across the top of a kitchen table or on an advanced factory floor—they get things done.

We see this enduring American spirit validated on a national stage. Out of nearly 1,200 small businesses that applied nationwide for the SBA's premier Freedom 250 Patriot Pitch Competition, Brewer, Maine-based Compotech Inc. stood tall as a top 10 national semifinalist. Founded by University of Maine graduates and recognized as our regional Small Business Manufacturer of the Year, Compotech embodies the grit, innovation and spirit of free enterprise that has defined our region since 1776.

As the SBA enters its 74th year of service, our commitment to providing the financial runway and contracting tools our employers need has never been stronger. We've officially doubled our cumulative financing caps to a historic $10 million, allowing capital-intensive manufacturers to combine 7(a) and 504 loans to purchase heavy machinery and expand facilities at the same time. We've also supported the pause of burdensome cybersecurity mandates to protect our small defense subcontractors from cost-prohibitive red tape.

True economic stability also requires helping our job creators build a lasting legacy for the next generation. That's why, alongside our expansion of commercial capital, we're promoting the U.S. Treasury's newly launched Trump Accounts platform. This free-to-open savings and investment tool gives our workers' children a secure stake in the American economy, while providing our region's small businesses with a low-cost, tax-preferred benefit to attract and retain top-tier talent. By connecting immediate financial relief from the Working Families Tax Cuts with long-term wealth building, the SBA is ensuring the next generation of New Englanders is fully equipped to carry forward our heritage of free enterprise.
