HOLDERNESS, NH — A Massachusetts man died Saturday morning after collapsing on the Old Bridle Path on West Rattlesnake Mountain, despite immediate efforts by fellow trailgoers and emergency personnel to save his life.

First responders were dispatched to the scene around 11:22 a.m. Saturday, after receiving reports of an unconscious hiker on the popular trail. Rescue personnel from Holderness Fire-Rescue, Center Harbor Fire-Rescue, Sandwich Fire-Rescue, Plymouth Ambulance, and conservation officers from the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department responded.

Bystanders on the trail found Richard Chateauneuf, 64, of Tyngsboro, MA, about three-quarters of a mile from the trailhead and immediately began CPR. First responders arrived shortly after to assist with medical measures, but Chateauneuf could not be revived. Emergency crews subsequently carried him down to the trailhead.

Following the incident, New Hampshire Fish and Game officials reiterated the importance of trail safety and preparation.

The state agency relies heavily on volunteer search-and-rescue teams and self-funded resources to carry out wilderness operations across New Hampshire. Funding for the response was provided through the state's Search and Rescue Fund alongside revenues generated by the NH Hike Safe Card—a voluntary card program that helps cover rescue costs without drawing from state hunting, fishing, or trapping license fees.

State officials remind all hikers to carry the "Ten Essentials" on every outing: a map, compass, extra food and water, warm clothing, headlamp, fire starter, first aid kit, whistle, rain and wind gear, and a knife. Further safety guidelines and Hike Safe Card information can be found at NH Fish and Game
