The Art Center in Dover, New Hampshire, is pleased to present Beyond the Surface: National Mixed Media Exhibition, on display now through October 31, 2026. This juried exhibition brings together artists from across the country in an exciting exploration of the extraordinary possibilities of mixed media.
Juried by Dennis Cardalisco, Beyond the Surface fills The Art Center’s gallery with a diverse collection of paintings, collage, fiber, assemblage, sculpture, found objects, and dimensional works that challenge traditional artistic boundaries and invite viewers to take a closer look.
Walking through the exhibition, visitors encounter an incredible range of materials, techniques, scale, and artistic voices. Large, expressive works share the gallery with intricate collages and intimate pieces, while sculptural and fiber works extend beyond the traditional picture plane. Some works are bold and commanding; others are whimsical, abstract, highly detailed, or quietly contemplative.
What makes Beyond the Surface especially compelling is the experience of seeing these works together. Layers of paper, fabric, paint, fiber, found materials, texture, and three-dimensional elements reveal themselves as viewers move through the gallery. Photographs offer only a glimpse. This is an exhibition that truly needs to be experienced in person.
“Mixed media gives artists an incredible freedom to move beyond the limitations of a single material or process,” said Rebecca Proctor, Founder of The Art Center. “When we finished installing the exhibition, I was struck by how different every artist’s approach is. There is something unexpected around every corner. You find yourself moving closer to a piece to discover how it was made, then stepping back to experience it as a whole. It is an exciting exhibition, and I think visitors are going to want to spend time exploring it.”
The public is invited to meet the participating artists and celebrate Beyond the Surface during the Artist Reception on Saturday, October 3, from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at The Art Center. The reception is free and open to the public.

Join us for the first-ever Dover Pumpkin Stroll, a free, family-friendly evening in downtown Dover! On Saturday, October 24, from 5–8 PM, the Joe B. Parks Riverwalk Public Gardens will come alive with community-carved jack-o’-lanterns, decorative lighting, seasonal displays, music, and a special family photo opportunity along the Cochecho River. 
Want to be part of the display? Residents, families, schools, community groups, and local organizations are invited to carve a pumpkin and drop it off between 12–3 PM on event day at the Orchard Street Parking Lot. Then come back from 5–8 PM to enjoy the stroll and see your pumpkin glowing alongside creations from across the community. 
Visitors can also explore downtown businesses displaying their own creatively carved pumpkins and vote for their favorite in the People’s Choice Business Pumpkin Award. The Pumpkin Stroll is part of an afternoon and evening of Halloween fun downtown, alongside other activities hosted by community partners. 
The Dover Pumpkin Stroll is hosted by Communitively through its Discover Dover NH initiative and is presented by Profile Bank.
