Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Seacoast Dispels Myths of Mentoring

PORTSMOUTH — Supporting and creating a community of strong-willed, goal- orientated and driven children, ranging in ages from 6 to 17 years old, is part of sustainability. The only way to create a green world is to encourage people to be interested in supporting a green world. Community well-being is one of the first steps in environmental well-being.

With that said, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Seacoast excels in giving children a chance to thrive. Its vision is that all children achieve success in life, and it promotes that goal by pairing adult mentors — or “Bigs” as they are called — with children — called “Littles.” The BBBSGS vision has provided children with opportunities they otherwise would never have experienced.

BBBSGS itself is partnered with the Green Alliance, carrying out green business practices, and finding ways to become greener in the future. Nevertheless, child mentoring is of upmost importance to the organization, and thus, that’s where its energy goes.

A child is paired in a 1-to-1 relationship with an adult who provides the child with experiences that expand that child’s perspective. This program not only allows a child to see the world outside of his or her experience, but also ensures that this child’s life is changed for the better, forever. Hope and opportunity are handed over to these children who would otherwise never see, hear or know that these opportunities can await them.

Bigs spend a total of four hours a month with their Littles, sharing fun activities, telling stories, and learning about each other. The program’s innate flexibility provides greater incentive to join the BBBSGS effort and become a mentor. It takes one Big, one Little and zero dollars to change a child’s life.

After 35 years of promoting children’s well-being, BBBSGS know the need still exists. There are currently 64 kids waiting for their Big to appear. Show them the way, and give them the strength to lead better lives.
