T. Elliot Young Lecture

"Retiring the champ" is a theatrical story offering a glimpse at the physical journey of navigating the medical and elder care sysetm, the social journey of family relationships and their delicate weave, and the spiritual journey of a son from frustrated caregiver to soulful adult.

It is the moving the often humorous tale of Trina, first daughter of immigrant Jews, a rebel, intellectual, and former union organizer fighting her last battle.  Her son, alienated by her aggressive style and old world traditions, discovers he is the only one available to guide her through the maze of Alzheimer's disease and the end of life.

We invite you to a very special and entertaining evening with Judith Black, one of the nation's most admired practitioners of the storytelling art.  As described in the American Journal of Alzheimer's Disease and Other Dementias, "Retiring the Champ"...is a spoken word account by Black of the complicated dance a family performs to deal with Alzheimer's disease without losing the unique human being...a poignant reminder of the humanity of the patient and the complexity of patient relationships to family and environment.
