You are invited to a 200th birthday celebration in honor of Exeter-born Abolitionist poet, James Monroe Whitfield, in the Exeter Town Hall art gallery on April 2nd, from 1-3pm. Whitfield was recently profiled in the local book "Incident at Ioka", and the scholarly book "Works of James M. Whitfield: America and Other Writings by a Nineteenth-century African American Poet." Two of his works were included in the 2021 anthology "African American Poetry; 250 Years of Struggle and Song".
This event takes place during the annual Exeter LitFest, a free celebration of local authors in the Exeter Town Hall. The Exeter LitFest has a full day schedule of local novelists, poets, mystery writers, free books, and more. The full noon-5pm schedule will be posted soon on their website ExeterLitFest.com
