Exeter Police Get Motorcycle

A federal grant helped pay for it.

Exeter drivers will soon see a police motorcycle on patrol.

The Police Department recently leased the motorcycle for about $4,300 for one year. A $1,500 federal grant offset the cost.

Police Chief Richard Kane said the motorcycle unit will be used to combat speeding.

Money for the motorcycle was approved by voters last month as part of the town's annual budget.

Town officials said they want to see how effective the motorcycle unit is after a year and then decide if it should be made a regular part of the police department's fleet. It's the only motorcycle Exeter police have.

At a deliberative session earlier this year, a resident made a motion to eliminate funding for the motorcycle, but a majority of voters decided against the move.
