Exeter Teacher Named NH History Teacher Of The Year

EXETER, NH—An Exeter Cooperative Middle School teacher has been honored as the 2021 New Hampshire History Teacher of the Year.
Jacob Goodwin, who teaches sixth grade, has been a history teacher at CMS for seven years. He was nominated by a fellow history teacher whose children he taught, according to a news release. This was the third time he was nominated for History Teacher of the Year.
“The work that we do as history teachers is looking at the past through clear eyes so that we can help our world with a full heart now and into the future,” Goodwin said in the news release. “This leads to active learning and participation in our communities.”

Cooperative Middle School is part of SAU 16. Dr. David Ryan, superintendent of SAU 16, said Goodwin's award is very exciting.
“He, along with all of our SAU 16 teachers, are dedicated to teaching our youth and make positive contributions that result in educational excellence and reflect so positively across the communities we serve," Ryan said in a news release.
Goodwin will receive a number of American history books and educational materials as part of the award.

This annual award is given by the nonprofit Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. A National History Teacher of the Year will be selected this fall, with finalists announced September 9.
“This award is so meaningful,” said Goodwin. “There have been so many teachers who have supported me along the way and that is a big part of this award. It’s all about the community and the community of teachers supporting each other on the work that we are all doing with the students.”
