First Day of School for 6,000 Exeter-Area Students

Monday was back-to-school day for about 6,000 students and 1,200 teachers and administrative staff in the Exeter-area school district.

"We were off to a great start," said Superintendent Michael Morgan, adding there were no major problems.

Exeter is in School Administrative Unit 16, which includes Brentwood, East Kingston, Exeter, Kensington, Newfields, and Stratham.

Morgan said there were about 25 new staff members this year.

One emphasis for students and teachers this year is suicide prevention, Morgan said. Several students have died by suicide in recent years.

"It's a tough topic," Morgan said. "We've had some terrible tragedies."

Several awareness events have been held for students and staff this year.
