Gov. Weare honored in DAR ‘America 250’ wreath‑laying ceremony

HAMPTON FALLS — New Hampshire’s "first president," Gov. Meshech Weare, was recently honored with an America 250 wreath‑laying ceremony at his gravesite.

The Exeter Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution partnered with the Hampton Falls Historical Society to recognize Weare’s leadership during the Revolutionary War, including his role on the committee that drafted the nation’s first state constitution in January 1776.

The wreath was placed by Hampton Falls residents Carol Moore, a retired Marine major, and Sedona Carroll, a junior member of the historical society. The ceremony was led by Exeter DAR Chapter Regent Renay Allen, with remarks from Wendy Harrington of the Hampton Falls Historical Society and prayers by Exeter DAR Chaplain Jane Dyer. Guest of honor Brian Burford, retired New Hampshire state archivist and a Meshech Weare scholar, attended as he continues work transcribing historical documents at MeshechWearePapers.org.
