Large Scale Intake of 45 Cockatiels at the NH SPCA

Organization requests assistance after owner passes away.

On Wednesday, Nov. 11, the New Hampshire SPCA in Stratham responded to a request from a local Animal Control Officer who was dealing with 45 Cockatiels in a home where the owner had passed away, according to a press statement. The local department was not equipped to handle such a large number of birds and needed immediate assistance.

As it is unusual to have more than just a few birds in our shelter at time, the staff immediately began preparing for their arrival by gathering cages, bowls, food, etc. When they arrived, the birds were showing signs of stress and possible illness. An avian veterinarian was called and has inspected the birds. A number of them were diagnosed with respiratory infection and all are in quarantine for 10 days.

“This was a case of someone who was doing their best with their birds, but when they passed away, the birds needed somewhere to go,” said Lisa Dennison, Executive Director of the New Hampshire SPCA. “We are grateful to be able to assist the ACO and the birds, knowing that we will heal their illnesses and, assuming the next of kin surrenders them, eventually make them available for adoption. In the meantime, we are asking for the community’s help in terms of supplies to properly care for them all.”

Since we rarely see this many birds at one time, we are requesting the public’s help with donations of the following Cockatiel supplies. Cages, Perches and Food are essential needs. The birds need to be separated into two or three per cage to be able to better assess and treat them. Most of the cages we have are for large birds and are not ideal for the smaller Cockatiels.

  • Cages (appropriately sized)
  • Perches (for small bird feet)
  • Cockatiel Food
  • Small Bird Toys
