May events at Newmarket Public Library

Love music and history? Stop by the Newmarket Public

Library on May 3 at 2 p.m. for

“Singing our History” by Random Acts of Harmony. The group Random Acts of

Harmony is an acoustic folk duo (Rob Becker and Dick Kruppa) who presents a

combination of musical entertainment and history, of interest to all ages. Stories

and songs included are by Stephen Foster, Woody Guthrie, Huddie Ledbetter (Lead

Belly,) John Prine and more. Random Acts of Kindness are an affiliate of the

New England Foundation for the Arts.





For

parents of teenagers looking for some parenting advice, Dr. John Mince will

present “Parenting Your Teens: Effective Ideas and Actions” on May 8 from 6:30

to 7:30 p.m. Dr. Mince has over 30 years of

experience as a school counselor, a family therapist, and adjunct professor, as

well as a supervisor and trainer of family therapists. He will focus on

several areas, including - effective vs. ineffective messages;

using novelty and surprise to help communicate; strengthening our attachment to

our teens; communicating more effectively with schools about our teens and how

reducing parent stress helps teens with their stress.





High

school students: Worried about taking the ACT, SAT or

PSATs? Practice makes perfect....The library will be offering a new program

called Testing, Education and Resource Center (TERC).
TERC features

full-length, timed practice exams that simulate the actual testing experience.

TERC is not just for high school students. It is for all types of students -

graduate, specialty school and beyond.  Using the program is simple. It


can be accessed in the library and from home using your Newmarket Library card.

     If you’d like some help learning new

technologies, one on one tutoring is available for computers or E-readers. Just

call or come in to make an appointment.

A great

way to introduce a love of reading at a young age is storytime. Tuesdays at 10:30, children are invited to

stop by for a story and craft. The storytimes will end on May 27th,

when the summer reading program kicks off (time TBD).





If you

would like to get involved in something and love the library, think about

joining the Friends of the Newmarket Public Library. The next meeting will

be May 1 at 7 p.m.





Love

talking about books? Check out the Books and Coffee Discussion Group. This

month’s book is “The Power of One” by Bryce Courtenay. The group will meet

on May 16 at 10:30 a.m.





 And if you’d love to expand your book collection,

be sure to check out the Friends’ monthly book sale being held May 12 from 6 to 8

p.m. in the library’s basement.





The

library continues to host free movies on Friday nights. Features this month include: an animated Disney Feature with

Tinkerbell and her friends on the search for missing blue pixie dust (rated G,

78 minutes, May 2 at 6:30 p.m.); Brad Pitt stars in the story of an

professional baseball team manager who attempts

to assemble a baseball team on a lean budget by employing computer-generated

analysis to acquire new players (rated PG-13, 133 minutes, May 9 at 6:30 p.m.);

Matthew McConaughey stars as a Dallas electrician in 1985 who works around the

system to get AIDS patients medication they need after he is diagnosed with the

disease (rated R, 117 minutes, May 16 at 6:30 p.m.); a young man is recruited

by the International Military to lead the fight against the Formics, a

genocidal alien race which nearly annihilated the human race in a previous

invasion (rated PG-13, 114 minutes, May 23 at 6:30 p.m.). All movies are free

and open to the public and it’s ok to bring a snack, we just ask that you help

pick up after the conclusion of the movie.
