Newmarket Car Parade For Former Principal Misguided-Inappropriate
Mazzone and Givens Must Explain Exactly What Took Place
Newmarket students, teachers, and community members recent “car parade” for former Newmarket principal Chris Mazzone, thanking him for his years of service, was entirely misguided and inappropriate.
Mazzone was placed on administrative leave last November by SAU 31 Superintendent Susan Givens. The only way Given’s could have removed Mazzone was for cause, meaning, Mazzone did something wrong. This fact does not support a justification for any celebration.
The fact that Mazzone also accepted a reassignment to help oversee the ongoing expansion work at the Junior-Senior High School, a position which did not exist at the time, and one for which he was not qualified or certified to perform, also does not warrant any celebration. Mazzone knew the position was created as a compromise reached between him and Givens.
The truth is Newmarket taxpayers were taken for a ride over Mazzone’s and Givens’s actions concerning his removal and reassignment. And any celebration of these actions is completely out of line.
Anyone paying attention to what took place should be able to understand that Mazzone was fired for doing something wrong, and then Given’s paid him off for the rest of the school year with this fake/made-up position, rather than and doing the right thing by going through a dismissal process with all of its legal implications and costs.
Whether the good people of Newmarket think Mazzone’s and Givens’s actions benefited the school district and Mazzone and thus were justified, the reality is what they did was unethical and in my opinion, completely illegal.
Until the people of Newmarket have answers about exactly what transpired causing Mazzone’s removal, and why he accepted taxpayer money for a job which did not exist and he was unqualified to accept, any parade celebrating the man should not have taken place.
