Officials: 500+ Haven't Been Tested in Hepatitis C Outbreak

Thirty-two Exeter Hospital patients were infected with the liver disease.

State health officials said nearly 600 patients possibly exposed to a hepatitis C outbreak at Exeter Hospital last year have yet to be tested for the potentially deadly liver disease.

Prosecutors said the outbreak was started by medical technician David Kwiatkowski, who allegedly spread his hepatitis C to 32 patients by injecting himself with their medication to get high. One of those patients recently spread the disease to a partner through sexual contact, health officials said.

Kwiatkowski is currently in jail awaiting trial. He faces up to 98 years in prison.

The Associated Press reported that about 580 of 4,700 patients possibly exposed to the outbreak have yet to get tested.

Kwiatkowski was a medical technician who worked at hospitals across the country. Health officials have said he spread his disease to at least a dozen more patients and other hospitals using the same "drug diversion" tactic.
