Phillips Exeter Student Excels in Int'l Math Contest

Sophomore David Yang led an American group of students.

sophomore David Yang led an American group of students to a second-place finish in an international math contest last month. China placed first.

Yang tied for the fourth-best individial score of the  International Mathematical Olympiad, which was held in Amsterdam.

Participants took a four-and-a-half hour, three-problem exam. A sample question can be found here: http://www.imo-official.org/problems.aspx.

More than 100 nations competed in the event.

The American team included other students from New England. Here's a full list:

  • Wenyu Cao, a senior at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts
  • Benjamin Gunby, a junior at Georgetown Day School in Washington, D.C.
  • Xiaoyu He, a junior at Acton-Boxborough Regional High School in Acton, Massachusetts
  • Mitchell Lee, a junior at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science/Tech in Alexandria, Virginia
  • Evan O'Dorney, a senior at Venture Home School in Danville, California
  • David Yang, a sophomore at Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire
  • Sam Zbarsky, a sophomore at Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Maryland, who served as alternate
