On
August 7, 1782, General George Washington issued an order allowing soldiers who
performed “meritorious action” to sew a purple heart of cloth or silk onto
their uniforms. We honor the anniversary of this prestigious award and
celebrate an original purple heart in our collection, by offering free
admission to all active and retired military personnel during regular tour
hours.
