Selectmen Agree on Exeter Sportsman's Club Cleanup Plan

The Board of Selectmen this week approved a cleanup plan for the Exeter Sportsman's Club's gun range.

The range has lead shot and clay target fragments in the soil, according to studies commissioned by the town.

The town owns the land and leases it to the club.

The deal includes a stipulation that the club pay for the cleanup costs, which were estimated at about $3,200.

Selectmen approved the plan after a sometimes contentious debate with gun club officials Monday.

"I remain concerned that the Sportsman's club is currently led by folks (who) are overly focused on rights and not tending to obligations," Selectman Dan Chartrand said.

"The club has observed its obligations," replied club President Joe Kenick.

The club is also in the process of building a berm which it said will muffle the sound of gunshots. Neighbors asked the club to do so after they complained about the noise.
