Smith Talks About Book, 'They Sawed Up a Storm'
Stratham Historical Society, Wiggin Memorial Library jointly sponsor talk on Sept. 14.

The Stratham Historical Society and Stratham’s Wiggin Memorial Library will jointly sponsor a program presented by Sarah Shea Smith, author of, They Sawed Up a Storm (Women’s Sawmill at Turkey Pond, NH 1942) on Sept. 14, 2015, according to a press statement.
In 1942 a group of New Hampshire women operated a saw mill on the shores of Turkey Pond, Concord. The sawmill, one of two on the pond, was built by the U.S. Forest Service to saw up what remained of the logs stored in the water from the 1938 hurricane. The book is about this group of women , the 1938 hurricane, the timber salvage efforts and the determination of the people of New England.
The author and presenter, Sarah Shea Smith is Extension professor and forest industry specialist, at the University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension, a post she has held since 1989. Sarah has worked as a hardwood lumber inspector, a teacher and a door-and-trim carpenter. She holds a bachelor of science degree in forestry and a master’s in occupational education from UNH.

The program will be held at the Stratham Fire Department, Morgera Community Room, which is located at 4 Winnicutt Road, (corner of Portsmouth Avenue and Winnicutt Road). A business meeting for the Historical Society members will be held at 6:30 p.m. The presentation, scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., is FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. There is ample parking and light refreshments will be served.
