'The Days of Washington Operating By Showdown Must End'

Congressional lawmakers on Wednesday night agreed to end the government shutdown.

The government shutdown is over.

Congressional lawmakers on Wednesday night agreed to a deal that ended the 16-day ordeal, according to the Associated Press.

The effects of the shutdown reverberated on the Seacoast. More than a thousand Portsmouth Naval Shipyard workers were furloughed— as were about 100 members of the Pease Air National Guard Base.

Gov. Maggie Hassan on Wednesday night issued the following statement:

"While I am pleased that Congress finally reached an agreement to end the federal government shutdown and avert a catastrophic default, this entire episode was reckless and unnecessary, and it caused real harm to New Hampshire's families and economy.

"With today's agreement, there are new deadlines in place, but the days of Washington operating by showdown must end. The uncertainty caused by each successive confrontation hurts our economy and puts senseless strain on families.

"In New Hampshire, members of both parties have proven we can work together constructively to pass a budget on time and to solve problems on behalf of the people of our state. Washington must now do the same."
