The 17th Annual Transgender Day of Remembrance will honor transgender people lost to anti-transgender violence during the last 12 months. The Day of Remembrance began in 1999 as a way to draw attention to the issue of anti-transgender violence. The event was initially created to mark the one year anniversary of the death of a Massachusetts transgender woman, Rita Hester, whose death remains unsolved.
The gathering will feature speakers and musical performances, including an appearance by members of the TransPosition Vocal Ensemble, a Manchester-based singing group featuring trans voices. The gathering will end with a reading of the names of the transgender people who were murdered in the past year.
