New Year's Bottle Attack Suspect Arrested

Mark Giles was charged with felony-level assault.

University of New Hampshire police on Thursday arrested a man accused of attacking a campus worker with a broken bottle on New Year's.

Mark Giles, 20, of Beverly, Mass. turned himself in and was charged with second-degree assault, a felony. He was released on $10,000 bail. Police said they are still searching for a young woman who was with Giles at the time of the alleged attack.

Giles, who doesn't attend UNH, was banned from campus.

Police said he assaulted the worker in the Gables, an on-campus apartment complex, at about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday. The victim was treated and released from a local hospital.

“We will do whatever is necessary to ensure the safety of every member of our community,” said UNH Police Chief Paul Dean in a statement. “When students return later this month we will remind them that they are responsible for the conduct of their guests at all times.”

Giles is scheduled to appear in Dover Circuit Court on March 13.

The incident is still under investigation and UNH police are asking anyone with information on the incident to call them at 603-862-1427.
