Lecture: Women, Tavern Keeping and Public Approval

Colonial-era taverns could get rowdy. Why would a woman want to own one? Scholar Maria Schmidt Blaine explores the world of Ann Jose Harvey, owner of a prominent Portsmouth tavern. Harvey ran the establishment for 20 years - in addition to raising seven children -- after her husband died in 1736. Sponsored by the NH Humanities Council.
