Hampton Recycling Committee News

Hampton now transports its recyclables to ecomaine in Portland, Me.

Did you know: Hampton now sends it recyclables to ecomaine. Ecomaine is a waste to energy, not for profit, company in Portland, Maine. Along with other benefits Hampton now spends considerably less money to transport the recyclables. We are continuing to do single stream recycling, recycling the same things with a few new additions. You can now also recycle grocery/ shopping bags. It is best to bundle them together by sticking them inside one bag. This is what ecomaine says on its brochure. "With the exception of Styrofoam your plastic is recyclable if the answers to all three questions are YES: 1. Does it have a number (1-7) in the middle of the chasing arrows? 2. Is it rigid or hard? (However plastic shopping bags ARE now recyclable) 3. Is it a container? No hazardous waste EVER! Items categorized as "hazardous waste" must be disposed of carefully and cannot be included with your trash or with single sort recycling. However, area transfer stations and recycling centers often offer programs to take this kind of waste." The HRC and the DPW plan to send a complete ecomaine brochure to all residents. We still urge people to use re-usable shopping bags particularly at the grocery store. The more plastic we get out of the environment the better, we use less oil (carbon) to make them and it is much safer for our wildlife. The Hampton DPW and ecomaine will be holding an open house at the Transfer Station on Saturday, June 22, 2013. It will be a great opportunity to learn more about this company. Watch for more information to come.
