Plant Disease Alert for Impatiens
UNH Extension advice regarding a new disease attacking impatiens
UNH Extension advises of a new disease threatening impatiens....Downy Mildew. It can wipe out an entire planting of impatiens and render the soil unusable for impatiens in subsequent years. (New Guinea impatiens are not affected)
UNH Extension recommends NOT planting impatiens but instead to consider alternative plantings.
You can read about Downy Mildew at the following link:http://extension.unh.edu/resources/files/Resource002660_Rep3945.pdf
A list of alternative plantings can be found at the following link:http://extension.unh.edu/resources/files/Resource002661_Rep3947.pdf
Most garden centers selling impatiens are aware of the risk that consumers face when they buy impatiens this year and we hope they are informing their customers.
Some garden centers are following the UNH Extension recommendation and will not sell the susceptible impatiens.
Become informed and realize the risks before you buy.
