Tebow 'Frightened Out of His Mind;' Remembering a Local Surfer
He looked like he was in over his head.Tim was running for his life all night, and that damn clock couldn't move fast enough.
Typically, I post the blog on Sunday mornings...that's typically. But there was this game on TV last night that was hyped to death all week long and well, I just had to watch it. Those of you who know me well enough know that Fridays and Saturdays, all day and night, are devoted to this weekly blog. This column of sorts. I know you are waiting for the weekly pics of the local surfers here and abroad. But if you really know me well, you also know that I am a full on hardcore New England Patriots fan. And I like a lot of you, I watched that game last night. And well, the column/blog just had to be pushed aside for a later posting. The hype that preceded this game was borderline insufferable insanity.
Look before any of you think I am down on Tim Tebow for being a Christian think again. I am a Christian. I've never hid that from anyone. I may not be out on the pulpit preaching the good word, but I am a Christian. I believe in something beyond this earth. I don't think Christians are better than anyone else. In fact, I have many friends who are Jewish, Muslim, and well, basically atheists. I've always been "Whatever floats your boat...you know, to each his own..." that kind of thinking. But this whole Tim Tebow thing? Give me a break.
I can't imagine God choosing Tim Tebow over anyone else out there.
Especially sports. God can't be picking winners and losers or can he? There's been an Internet joke that has circulated around the WWW for many years, I'm sure you've seen it. In any case, this stupid joke found it's way into my mailbox last week. It came from a Bronco fan who had obviously drank the Tebow Kool Aid. I mean he was crazy Tebow...you know the kind. Well, I read the email chuckled and then proceeded to re-write it Ralphie style and I sent it back to him. Well here, I'll let you guys read it, because I'm sure you'll get a kick out of it.
Tim Tebow, after living a full life, died. When he got to heaven, God was
showing him around. They came to a modest little house with a faded
Broncos flag in the window. "This house is yours for eternity Tim, said
God. "This is very special; not everyone gets a house up here." Tim felt
special, indeed, he kneeled on one knee and did his famous "Tebow"
and then he walked up to his house.
On his way up the porch, he noticed another house just around the corner.
It was a huge 3-story mansion with Red, White, and Blue sidewalks and drive ways, a 50 foot tall flagpole with an enormous Patriots Logo flag waving, a swimming pool in shape of New England, there was a Coach Belichick awning at the front door, and there were Patriots logos in every window, and ...much to Tebow's surprise a Tom Brady jersey on the front door.
Tim looked at God and said "God, I'm not trying to be ungrateful, but I
have a question. I was a fan favorite, I praised you after every game, I worshipped you, and made others aware of you, granted I may have been a bit erratic and jumpy with the ball, and I should of learned how to throw better like Tom Brady...but Good Lord...he never prayed to you like I did.
And Lord...He even had a child out of wedlock...!"
God said "So what's your point Tim?"
"Well, why does Tom Brady get a better house than me?"
God chuckled, and said "Tim, Timmy, that's not Tom's house, it's mine."
I wrote this back when we played the Broncos back in December. Can you imagine what I would of written today of that thing had found it's way into my mailbox? Suffice it to say, I would not be very kind to Timmy. Look, the kid had a remarkable year. Seriously. That kid did more for the NFL then almost the entire league this year. That alone is almost worth the insanity we all had to put up with the last week. Almost.
The truth is. As that bumbling idiot Boston Mayor Tom Menino tried to say this week..."Tebow is one individual...the Patriots are a team." A Football team. But if you want to compare quarterbacks...I will take Tom Brady any day of the week. Pink leash and all. I don't care if Brady is a kook surfer who wears a freaking
pink leash and rides a soft top. I could care less. He's a freaking quarter back on our hometeam. The New England Patriots. And those New England Patriots kicked the LIVING SHIT OUT OF THOSE DENVER BRONCOS last night.
Are you kidding me? FIVE Touchdown passes in the first half? Hell let's be honest here. The TOTAL amount of points on both sides came at the hands of the Patriots. If Brady didn't throw that INT and Riddly didn't cough up the ball, that measly 10 points those Horse toothed Jack Asses got never would of happened. Tim Tebow was running for his life all night.
Every time he called a time out I'd look over at Tony and John and say "That's not a time out, that's a God Have Mercy On me call!" OK, so that might have been a bit harsh. But honestly, Tebow looked scared. He looked like he was in over his head. I've seen that look on young Pee Wee football players that I coached. Kids frightened out of their minds. Tim was running for his life all night, and that damn clock couldn't move fast enough.
But the most telling image of all that most missed was this:
After the game Tim was walking around in a daze, his face was flushed and there were microphones and cameras in his face ...but Tim was looking for someone. Who? My guess is Brady. He wanted to find Brady...but Brady was out of there. But the image that got me was in his confused state he walked by a bunch of Christian players from both teams on their knees praying. Tebow looked at them and kept walking. He did not stop to pray with them. He kept stumbling around looking for Brady...looking for the REAL deal QB.
But Brady was gone. But what he left behind should shut the pieholes of those who think they no more than we do. And by we I mean those of us who follow the game. Those of us who know Brady, Belichick, and the rest of our team. And make no mistake about it. It is a team. And that Defense that all the talking babbling heads said was worse defense in the NFL this year did an outstanding job out there. That score was not indicative of what it should and could of been. Clearly we would of shut them out without a couple of snafus from the Offense.
Because that defense shut them down.
I'm not saying we are headed for the Superbowl...I am saying that the NE Patriots are a team that any team left, should be watching . And watching closely. But watch all you want. Because with the amount of weapons that Brady has at his disposal, and the defense playing the way they are, and special teams just cutting down the opponents on Kick offs and giving them terrible starting field position is something to watch. And then there's that coaching staff.
Speaking of which... let's just do what Coach Belichick said last night after the massacre..."Let's just enjoy this..."
Oh we are Bill. We most certainly are.
On behalf of the entire seacoast surf community, we want to send our condolences to the friends and family of surfer Shawn O'Shea who passed
away this past week on 1-11-12. Shawn was a 26 year veteran of the United States Marine Corps. He served many combat tours in the Global War On Terrorism. His brother and good friend Tim O'Shea had this board made for
him last summer when Shawn retired. Shawn was married and he and his
wife had three beautiful children.
May he Rest in Peace, and as always, Semper Fi Marine...
