You Won't Be Judged on the Oscars You Win
It's something to be proud of I suppose, but in the long run, more important things will define who you are.
Another week... another storm.
I'm not going to be one of those people who complain and say "I'm sick of winter." If I was sick of winter, I'd be out of here. I'd be in the tropics or I'd be in Puerto Rico with every other surfer from New Hampshire. Oh yea it's true. Puerto Rico has once again become a haven for New Hampshire surfers.
Puerto Rico became popular after the world contest in 1968.
Surfers like Nat Young (photo 3) from Australia shown here surfing Marias in 1968, made PR a hot destination for most East Coast surfers. Including the NH crew.
For the longest time every surfer who longed for the tropics would take that short flight to PR and bask in the warm tropical sun while surfing some world class surf. It was an easy trip.
Then it got crowded. As in real crowded. And just like that, PR was not the paradise we all thought it was. Right around that time Costa Rica was discovered and every surfer up north had a new destination. CR was the NEW surf paradise for us winter surfers who need that troppo break from the insane cold.
And then, CR got crowded. As in real crowded. Surprised?
You should not be. Most surfers are like lemmings. We all want to go where everyone else goes. I have seen it everywhere I have traveled. Surfers will surf where the crowds are. Don't know why that is, but it is. So Costa Rica got crowded. But hold on now, because Nicaragua was now being looked at as a quick getaway for NH surfers too. And then Panama.
But somewhere along the way in the last few years, people had forgotten about Puerto Rico. Not anymore. They have come back to PR in droves. I don't know how to compare the crowds from the early days until today, but I will say that the "locals" in PR are a bit uptight at the amount of surfers from NH who come down every winter.
But that's surfing kids. Puerto Rico is an easy trip. It's close enough by and not that costly. The only downside is, if you are looking to get away from NH for a much deserved break, think again. Everyone you know and surf with here in New Hampshire is in Puerto Rico. Have fun. I'll take my chances here in NH.
So Sunday was Oscar night. I will be watching because I need to
see what Seth McFarlane is going to say and do.

[Editor's note: This blog post was written before the Oscars.]
Seth McFarlane the genius behind Family Guy and other insanity will be hosting the Oscars tonight. I mean come on. You know he is going to bust on some of those celebrities, and why the hell not? Some stars need to be put back into their place of origin. I've met enough Rock Stars and other celebs in my life to realize one thing. We all put our pants on one leg at a time.
And more importantly, we will all be judged by what we did here on earth. Did you stop and help someone along the way. Did you sacrifice a part of your life to make someone else's life better. Did you do something as simple as making someone smile. That is how we will be judged. Not by how much money you earned. Or how many followers you have on your twitter account.
Or getting an Oscar.
All noteworthy and something to be proud of I suppose, but really, in the long run, it's what you have given back that will define who you are, and your legacy.
But having said all of that...I'll be watching tonight because, well truthfully, I love movies, and I love to be entertained. And tonight is all about that.
FYI My money is on "Lincoln" and "Argo."

So Seth, let the barbs fly! We are all waiting to laugh.
Now for Some Of My Weekly Global Observances:
OK so there is a new OJ trial in the making of sorts. The "Blade Runner" trial with Oscar Pistorius who is accused of killing his model girlfriend. He is called "Blade Runner" because of his custom fitted legs. Even OJ himself has commented on this trial in defense of Oscar.
