The service organizations at Winnacunnet are sponsoring a School and Community Book Drive from June 6 – 11th to collect books that can be used for Sustained Silent Reading next year.
Any high school age appropriate book is welcome. Boxes will be located in the front office, tables will be manned to collect at all lunches that week, and on Saturday, June 11, we will host a community ‘blitz’ outside the main entrance to the school (in the dining hall if inclement weather) - community members are invited to donate to the cause. Coffee and refreshments will be served.
SSR (Sustained Silent Reading) is a program where teachers set aside a block of time each day for quiet reading. SSR offers students an opportunity to read material of their own choice. In some schools, individual teachers use SSR as part of their programs, and in others, SSR has been adopted school-wide.
Research and literature convincingly describe many positive outcomes of the program. Foremost among these are improvements in attitudes and engagement towards reading, as well as improvements in a many reading skills from comprehension to spelling to word knowledge.
