kids choose the types of art lessons they want to experience

skills taught but kids decide how they want to use them

I don't show an adult finished product and expect the kids to imitate it

I demonstrate a skill with a couple of variations to stimulate their thinking and provide materials for them to experiment with

There is no wrong approach or application, just freedom to create
