Kilgore: Chauncey Loves North Hampton, Gets My Vote

Letter writer says good leadership is to listen to other viewpoints, make changes to proposals to find compromise.

From North Hampton Select Board:With much consideration and thought, I am endorsing George Chauncey for North Hampton Select Board. I have known George for many years, first getting to know him during the discussion of the Safety Complex back in 2014. While George was for the first complex design and I was not, we were able to disagree politely, and he was very considerate of my position. After the second time the warrant article failed, George reached out to Wally and me to see if there was a place for compromise. What struck me was his love of our town and how the complex debate was hurting the town.

George volunteered to chair a committee tasked to research alternative options for a brand-new complex. A plan was presented, and it was dismissed so quickly by the Board at the time it further divided the town. It became apparent that compromise was not going to happen with the Select Board, andthe only option was to be a new complex. That third plan was, of course, defeated. It was too big, too expensive, and not needed.

George is being accused in a recent mailer of being “wishy-washy.” I consider it a test of good leadership to listen to other viewpoints and make changes to one’s own proposals in an effort to find compromise. A “my way or the highway” approach only goes so far, but working together and finding solutions is the true measure of a great leader. I believe George is that man.

George has been vital to keeping our Cemeteries beautiful, our Town Hall in working condition, and the great Paul Revere Bell ringing. His work on the Budget Committee has been thoughtful and contemplative. With decades running his own company, George brings experience and knowledge that is needed in our town.

Please join me in supporting George Chauncey for Select Board on March 13. It is time to add some fresh ideas and new voices to the conversation here in North Hampton.
