LETTER: Time for Answers to Tough Questions
A local parent has some strong words about the lack of "appropriate" special education for North Hampton students.

Dear Board Members:
The following article is asking for a level playing field for parents of children with Special needs. These children are suppose to be PROTECTED by IDEA!
I would ask you as the current members of the school board why is it that at every juncture parents of Special Ed students in this town have to fight for their kids to receive an appropriate education?

I would bring your attention to the $65,000 dollars spent this past fiscal year (2011-2012) on Fees — and still NOT providing FAPE to these kids in our school district. We may be the only school district to "" have an ....well I would hope so since we are also the only school district to spend over 200% of their budget on Special Education attorney fees using the taxpayers money!
The school district's money is not yours to spend freely without asking appropriate questions like "why are we the only district in to have so many legal battles in special education?' Why did we spend $87,000 dollars in 2010 on SPECIAL education legal fees? $87,000 dollars!

Do you have any idea what type of appropriate special education programs could be purchased with that kind of money? Many programs, many highly qualified teachers, many things to help our kids!
Why is this being allowed to go on, because you are not asking appropriate questions, researching what other schools in the very same SAU are doing, using appropriate resources for help, for that matter asking the SPED parents for help!
I can assure you there are many informed, resourceful people in this town who would be MORE than willing to assist this cause. I am sure they would also do it for FREE if it meant we could get our kids an education as they are entitled to.
Why is this allowed to go on? Because YOU are allowing it to go on. Time to act. Call to action School Board! Also a time for action from the taxpayers to be fully informed exactly where and for what THEIR money is being spent on!
Time for some tough questions to be answered. Time to do right by the CHILDREN of North Hampton, ALL the children!
