Recycling!

News from the Hampton Recycling Education Committee

As a member of the Recycling Education Committee, I am always trying to educate people on the importance of recycling. I recently came across an article that reads the average American uses approximately 350 plastic grocery bags per year. They do not end up in just landfills, they end up in oceans as well. Over 100,00 seals, turtles, birds and whales die each year due the usage of plastic bags. I feel as though we can limit the use of these bags by using reusable bags. Hannaford sells them for as low as 99 cents. Please let’s try to keep the use of plastic bags down by using these reusable bags. We would be drastically reducing pollution, as well as keeping these bags from killing our wildlife. These plastic bags are a petroleum product as well as any plastic. Reducing the usage will also reduce our use of fossil fuels as well as reducing climate change. Many people don’t think they will live to see any of these drastic changes in our environment, but our future generations will unfortunately. If you start using just 1 less bag and gradually work to using none, you will have an impact on the environment and hopefully can educate other people on the importance of recycling and using less plastic bags. The plastic bags can be recycled at Hannaford, Shaws, Walmart and other retail stores may have a program. So please, let’s work together and make our impact on Mother Earth.  Thank you!
