“The team has worked very hard to raise money through yard sales, bake sales, restaurant night fundraisers, corporate sponsorships and a drawing but still have only raised $3500,” said Wendy Bergeron one of team’s managers. “If we don’t raise the money the kids won’t be able to attend the tournament.”
Destination ImagiNation is an international after school program for students from kindergarten to college.
Destination ImagiNation challenges teams to work together to solve a supplied challenge. The team has eight minutes to perform and present their findings in a skit. Each challenge uses many skills including structure construction, improvisation, public speaking, research, design, mathematics, playwriting, set design, physics, structural engineering and most importantly teamwork.
In addition to the supplied challenge teams are given an instant challenge at the tournament which they must solve in a matter of minutes.
The Winnacunnet team chose to participate in the Project Outreach challenge called World Canvas. The team had to identify and research a community problem and work with a community partner to work toward solving the community problem.
The Winnacunnet team chose poverty as their community problem and worked with the Hampton Community Coalition to assist families. The team sorted through donated toys, organized the Kids Kupboard and raised money for the organization.
“The students really enjoyed this challenge because they got to learn about and help their community.” Bergeron said.
The team would like to thank the following individuals and business for their donations thus far:
Anonymous, Lorie Garand, Thomas Kunz, Dott Ferrari, Gertrude Andrews, Sandra Difusco, Kim Orme, Alexis Hager, Merrimack Valley Animal Hospital, Sarah Trahan, Granite Bay Wealth Management, Liberty Lane Catering, Greg and Jodi Stansbury, John and Joellen Smart, Markland Welding Inc. and Tim and Stephanie Moore.
There is still time to donate to the trip! The team will be selling tickets for a drawing of a 19” LCD flat screen TV, MP3/iPod docking unit and gift certificates to iTunes and Xbox Live to be held May 14. Tickets are $5 for one and 3 for $10.
The team is also accepting donations. Please contact Wendy Bergeron at wmbergeron@winnacunnet.org to purchase tickets, make donations or for more information about the program.
