Embracing a New Year with One Little Word

Every New Year brings with it the opportunity for reflection and renewal. A time to look back on the old year, and make plans for a new one.

Every New Year brings with it the opportunity for reflection and renewal.  A time to look back on the old year, and make plans for a new one. As we age, we often feel that the years seem to go by more quickly. One year hastily becomes the next.

This year instead of making a long list of New Year’s resolutions you will likely break before the holiday decorations come down, think about what you would like to do with this New Year. How can you embrace this fresh start? What can you do or learn that will make a difference in your life? Really think about what it could be. Now take that emotion or idea and describe it. The trick is to see if you can you use just one word? One little word that is yours for the next twelve months?

One Little Word is a movement that has been gaining in popularity over the past few years. It encourages you to let one personal meaningful word guide you through the New Year. You choose the word, or in many cases, it chooses you. Then you let that word be your guidepost all year.

Are you facing an illness or dealing with grief? You might find your word to be “perseverance”. Did you accomplish a major goal? “Celebrate” may be the word that finds you. Have you been struggling with yourself over something you just can’t change? Perhaps your word for 2013 is “accept”. Whatever your one little word turns out to be, let it be your mantra.

If you are feeling especially reflective, you might consider joining the One Little Word Project. This online class takes you on a 12-month journey and helps you make your word a more tangible part of your life.
