How Bad Etiquette Hurts an Entire Nation

"Etiquette with Deborah", recognizes that now more than ever, kids need a strong foundation for their future. I can assist them in emphasizing in communication, respect, empathy and integrity.

Did you know that bad etiquette might be hurting the image of your entire country?

For instance, take our country, the United States of America. I love this country, and I hope you love your country, too.

However, as Peggy Noonan points out in a recent Wall Street Journal editorial, bad etiquette is making our country look bad to the rest of the world.

Here are just some examples of how the USA looks to the rest of the world, thanks to some bad examples:

  • Watch Snooki and friends on the reality television show "Jersey Shore" making drunken fools of themselves,  starting fights, and using foul language while dressing inappropriately.
  • Watch any of the "Real Housewives" shows and see rich women fighting with each other, and showing a complete lack of manners and class.
  • See a riot start McDonald's when the restaurant runs out of Chicken McNuggets.
  • See a news story about a 5-year-old bringing a gun to school. The gun fires, and injures three people.
  • Watch celebrities like Charlie Sheen self-destruct in public, after getting fired for drugs and really risky behavior.
  • Watch our politicians fight in order to keep their power, while our country continues to spend money irresponsibly. (Etiquette starts with a sense of personal responsibility, and respect for others).

Anyone with a television can see examples like this every day, and it makes our country look very ill-mannered, to say the least – and the above examples are only the tip of the iceberg.

If we take a stand for etiquette, and if we train others in the ways of proper etiquette, we can – slowly but surely – turn the tide. We can change the entire image of a nation. After all, etiquette is not just about tea parties and cotillions. It is a way of approaching everything one does with respect, civility, and responsibility.

I sincerely hope you let me teach children, teens, and businesspeople in the wonderful field of etiquette. You can change the world, slowly but noticeably, starting with your own community.
