Carson Alerts Homeowners to Voluntary Well Water Testing

NH DES is offering free testing to some Londonderry residents to check for possible MtBE contamination.

State Sen. Sharon Carson, R-Londonderry, today announced that the NH Department of Environmental Services will be offering free, voluntary well water testing in two separate areas of Londonderry to check for possible MtBE contamination.

Homes on Bockes Road near the intersection with Mammoth Road or near the intersection of Nashua Road and Gilcreast Road will be invited to participate in DES’s voluntary well sampling program at no cost. Homeowners should expect a letter from DES in their mailboxes shortly. MtBE, an organic compound used as a gasoline additive up until 2006, enters the water table through gasoline spills. DES continues to samples public and private wells near such spills to monitor the spread of MtBE, and determine when cleanup efforts are needed. DES stresses that inclusion in the sampling program does not necessarily mean that a well is contaminated.

“Clean water is essential, and homeowners should know if their water is free from contamination,” Carson said. “Participating in this sampling program not only provides homeowners with accurate well water testing, but gives state officials valuable information to combat the spread of MtBE. I encourage all homeowners in the sampling area to take advantage of this opportunity.”

The sampling program and any subsequent cleanup efforts are funded through the state’s settlement agreement with manufacturers and refiners of MtBE, and will not result in any costs to homeowners or taxpayers.
