LONDONDERRY, NH — One of Manchester’s state Senators will seek the Democratic nomination in September to represent District 4 on the Executive Council.

State Sen. Kevin Cavanaugh (D-Manchester) said he would be filing to run next month for the seat currently held by Republican Ted Gatsas, the former mayor of Manchester.

Cavanaugh has been a state Senator since 2017 and an alderman in Ward 1 in Manchester since 2015. He previously worked as a member of the IBEW but is now retired. Cavanaugh was also a former football coach for both West and Memorial high schools in Manchester.

“As a lifelong Granite Stater, blue-collar worker, Manchester alderman, and state Senator for District 16, I have always fought for working families because I know firsthand the challenges they face,” he said. “We need a state that puts people first and works to help communities meet their basic needs. Unfortunately, it is clear that we have an Executive Council that neglects their responsibility to the hard-working families of New Hampshire.”

Cavanaugh chastised the council for approving millions of dollars for school choice programs and not paying state employees “fair wages.” He also accused council members of putting “politics above public health,” by rejecting federal pandemic funds and family planning services.
