'Despondent' Derry Man Arrested After Handgun Incident: Police

DERRY, NH — A 24-year-old Derry man was arrested and charged with three felony offenses, including criminal threatening, following in incident Monday that caused the Overledge Road neighborhood of Derry to be locked down for nearly two hours, Derry police said.

Zachary Orlando surrendered to law enforcement authorities minutes after officers heard a gunshot from inside a home where police were called Monday morning. Officers arrived at the residence at 13R Overledge Road at 11:18 a.m. after a family member told police that Orlando had become despondent and had been threatening during an exchange inside the home. At one point, the family member told police that Orlando pulled out a handgun, which led the relative to seek help, police said in a news release.

After several attempts by the police to speak with Orlando, the New Hampshire Special Operations Unit was called and neighbors were told to stay in place or leave the area for their safety. As the Special Operations Unit arrived, officers heard a gunshot before Orlando eventually surrendered, police said. No one was injured in the incident.

Orlando is charged with criminal threatening, a felony, along with reckless conduct and domestic threatening, which are also felonies, police said. Orlando was being held by Derry Police Monday afternoon pending a bond hearing and Orlando is expected to appear in court on Tuesday.
