Flags to Half-Staff on Sunday in Honor of James Foley
Gov. Hassan directs flags to be lowered to honor New Hampshire journalist killed overseas; Catholic Diocese also holding special Mass.

Flags around New Hampshire will be lowered to half-staff on Sunday, Aug. 24, to honor journalist James Foley.
In a statement, Gov. Maggie Hassan, D-Exeter, said, Foley “exemplified the best of our journalistic ideals, fearlessly going to some of the world’s most dangerous places to expose the horrific consequences of war and the beautiful humanity of those innocent civilians affected by it. An unconscionable act of terror took him from us far too soon, but his unyielding commitment to advancing our cherished First Amendment right across the globe and the truths he unveiled will live on forever. As Granite Staters and people around the world mourn, our thoughts and prayers remain with the Foley family and their loved ones.”
The Diocese of Manchester is the Roman Catholic Church of New Hampshire is also holding a special Mass for the family at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, 189 N. Main St. in Rochester, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 24.
