A former town employee has been charged with stealing more than $1,500 from the Derry Transfer Station.
Daniel J. Hagerty, 74, of 139 Rockingham Road #2, Derry was arrested Monday and charged with Class A felony theft, according to Derry Police. He was released on $2,500 personal recognizance bail and is scheduled to be arraigned in Derry District Court on Aug. 22.
On June 27, Derry Police began an investigation into a possible employee theft occurring at the transfer station. Public works supervisors and the town's IT Department had discovered what appeared to be transaction discrepancies occurring at the scales.
After investigating, police detectives determined that over the past several months, a number of transactions had been deleted from the transfer station's daily receipts. The money associated with those transactions was also missing.
