Liberty Utilities Launches Residential Home Energy Report Program

Starting this week Liberty Utilities will begin sending personalized Home Energy Reports to a selected group of their natural gas customers. This innovative tool will provide essential information designed to help customers improve the energy efficiency of their homes and save money on natural gas bills.

“The majority of our customers are looking for ways to be more energy efficient, and these Home Energy Reports will provide our customers with the tools needed to make smarter choices about how they use energy” said Eric Stanley, Energy Efficiency Program Manager at Liberty Utilities. “Based on the success of this program around the world, we are expecting it to generate significant savings for our customers.”

Developed by cloud software provider Opower, the program includes monthly reports that offer detailed insights about home energy consumption, showing customers how their home’s energy usage varies over time and across seasons. The reports also provide low cost tips on how to reduce energy usage, which are tailored to customers based on their energy usage habits. One of the report highlights is the neighbor comparison, an anonymous comparison that tells customers how much energy they use compared to approximately 100 similarly sized and equipped homes in the area.

The program also includes an interactive web portal, where customers can fill out a simple home audit survey to gain additional insights about their energy use, including a breakdown of energy usage by appliance. Emailed reports will also be sent out to customers who qualify. The printed reports, emails, and web portal are each designed to allow customers to actively engage with their energy information.

Opower’s program consistently saves customers between 1.5 and 3.5 percent on their energy bills, and has cumulatively saved enough to power every home in New Hampshire for a year.
