At the recent NH/VT State Powerlifting Championships in New Market, NH, Londonderry resident Patrick Kusior broke 3 world records (WR). Competing in the 55-59 age category and the 198 pound weight class, Kusior squatted 525 (WR), bench pressed 350 (WR) and deadlifted 510 pounds for a total of 1,385 pounds (WR). The meet was hosted by Jamie and Meghan Matta and was sanctioned by the Revolution Powerlifting Syndicate. Kusior stated "I used to compete a lot in my 20s and early 30s, then I took a decades-long break. Family, work, travel and other obligations made it difficult to competitively weight train, so I turned to running and ran numerous 5K races throughout the decades. Although fit, I missed the heavy weight training and decided to get back into powerlifting 5 years ago at the age of 51". "When I was in my 20s, my best total was 1,480 pounds. It is very satisfying that 30 years later, I'm only 95 pounds away from my all-time best total". "Getting back into powerlfting has been an enjoyable journey and I could not have done it without the support of my wife, son, coaches, training partners and friends."
Kusior believes that this is a great time to be an athlete and attributes his success to good nutrition, sleep, flexibility, cardio, phone apps to track progress, YouTube for training tips, video from his phone to analyze form, supplements like protein, creatine, and pre-workout drinks, easy access to gyms, and online purchasing of equipment like belts, wraps and tape. "So much of this was not available 30 years ago and I encourage people to take advantage of local gyms and fitness programs" says Kusior.
The 56 year-old powerlifting phenom has a complete home gym, but also likes to workout at the Derry Planet Fitness. "The people, staff and equipment at PF are outstanding and I enjoy going there about 5 times per week" says Kusior. A 2nd degree Blackbelt in Hap Ki Do, Kusior has been training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) for the past couple of years at Woo Kickboxing at the Crossroads Mall in Londonderry. "Martial arts training has added so much to my life. There is the physical aspect, but I really enjoy the camaraderie and the friends that I've made at Woo; also BJJ is a wonderful, natural stress reliever" added Kusior.
