Man Arrested for DWI, Drugs on I-93

New Hampshire State Police: John Banfield of Nashua smashed into a guardrail in Londonderry, gave false name.

A local man was arrested earlier today on numerous charges after a crash on I-93 in Londonderry.

John R. Banfield, 37, of Nashua, was arrested at a little before noon on Jan. 21, and charged with driving while intoxicated – drugs, possession of a controlled drug, conduct after an accident, disobeying a police officer, false report to a police officer, operating under suspension, and two felony warrant out of Hillsborough District Court and the state of Maine.

According to New Hampshire State Police, dispatch received a report of a hazardous operator driving north on I-93 in Londonderry.

The vehicle, a 2003 Land Rover, then crashed into a guardrail just north of Exit 5. Troopers arrived at the scene and were told that a man reportedly exited the vehicle and was seen running down the Interstate away from the accident. A sergeant trooper located the man, Banfield, who allegedly gave the trooper a false name. The trooper later learned his correct name.

Banfield reportedly complained of minor injuries as a result of the accident and was treated at Elliot Hospital in Manchester before being taken into custody, according to the report. He refused bail and will be arraigned in Derry District Court on Jan. 22.

Banfield, according to Nashua Police, was arrested in March of 2014, and charged with four counts of forgery, two resisting charges, two receiving stolen property counts, and a fugitive from justice charge. In May 2010, according to the Lawrence Eagle-Tribune, he was arrested for armed robbery at a 7-Eleven in Lawrence, MA. In that incident, he allegedly gave the name of a cousin when he was arrested.
