Tupelo Announces Three New Shows

Leon Redbone is among the new acts announced at the Londonderry music hall.

We have THREE new shows to announce this week!

June 14 JAMES MONTGOMERY BAND with Barrence Whitfield: Two music legends and longtime friends, James Montgomery and Barrence Whitfield, join forces for a "must see" show. Whitfield is an international singing phenomenon who continues to wow audiences worldwide with his uniquely powerful voice. He runs the gamut from hard core Blues to R&B, Jump, and even some funky Rockabilly. His energy on stage is magnetic and his voice one of the very best in the business. His ardent fans include Robert Plant, Dr. John, Steve Earle, Los Lobos, and Little Richard. That should give you some idea of the range he is capable of singing! This highly dynamic show has thrilled audiences throughout New England and they anticipate a European tour in the spring. See them now before they get too hot to handle.

July 27 BIG COUNTRY: Big Country was originally formed in 1981 by guitar playing founder members Stuart Adamson and Bruce Watson both native of the band’s hometown Dunfermline in Scotland. Initially driven by a shared vision of widescreen guitar melody, harmony and lyric, the classic Big Country sound was further enhanced later that summer by the arrival of drummer Mark Brzezicki and bass player Tony Butler. This is the Big Country that (with producer Steve Lillywhite), recorded the classic debut album ‘The Crossing’ in 1983. The band broke massively worldwide with the release of the album’s classic singles ‘Fields Of Fire’, ‘Chance’ and signature song ‘In A Big Country’, which went on to become massive worldwide hits, selling over 2 million copies and driving ‘The Crossing’ to 3 prestigious Grammy nominations in the USA. The run of success continued throughout the 1980′s with the release of the anthemic single ‘Wonderland’ and the second album ‘Steeltown’ (1984), which debuted at Number 1 in the UK and contained the hit singles ‘East Of Eden, ‘Just a Shadow’ and ‘Where The Rose Is Sown’. In 1985, Big Country appeared at Live Aid in London followed by further successful album releases ‘The Seer’ (1986, which included the bands biggest UK hit ‘Look Away’, which also reached Number 1 in the Irish Singles chart) and ‘Peace In Our Time’ (1988), which saw the band playing the first ever privately promoted gig in Russia at the Moscow Sports Stadium.

August 22 LEON REDBONE: While his gravelly baritone and omnipresent fedora, dark glasses and Groucho Marx moustache made him one of the more distinct and recognizable characters in popular music, little is known about the neo-vaudeville crooner Leon Redbone. Throughout his career, he steadfastly refused to divulge any information about his background or personal life – Because Redbone first emerged as a performer in Toronto during the 1970s, he was believed to be Canadian; his work, a revival of pre-World War II ragtime, jazz and blues sounds, recalled the work of performers ranging from Jelly Roll Morton and Bing Crosby to blackface star Emmett Miller.
