McLaughlin Jr. Middle School in Manchester just became the first campus to finish renovations under the city's $306 million school improvement plan, adding over 35,000 square feet of new space and a safer main entrance. The multi-year investment will also upgrade Manchester's other middle schools and build a new elementary school, which district leaders say is all about better serving local students.

4. Cecile E. Demers (thewestfieldnews.com) — Longtime Manchester native Cecile E. Demers, born there in 1928 and an early-career worker at Chicopee Mills in the city, has died at 97. Her life spanned community leadership, a late-in-life college degree, and deep involvement in church and civic groups, with a memorial Mass planned in Westfield, Massachusetts next month.
